When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with leading one of the world’s most secret and ancient events, the selection of a new Pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. Many of the things Cardinal Lawrence and the rest of the priests do during the film’s conclave process are accurate to the Catholic faith and centuries of tradition. After the Pope’s death, his ring (called the Fisherman’s Ring) is removed and destroyed. The Vatican announces that the throne of the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) is vacant.
Cardinal Benitez delivers his culminating speech in Spanish
The College of Cardinals is sequestered in apartments (called the Domus Sanctae Marthae or House of Saint Martha) to eat and sleep between votes. The windows and doors of the Sistine Chapel, where the actual election takes place and the ballots are cast, are darkened, closed, and locked to maintain the secrecy of the conclave. All of the cardinals speak fluent Latin, and many have conversations in Italian. Spanish and Italian are derived from Latin, so the cardinals may have a basic understanding of Spanish.

I just got back from the theater after watching “Conclave,” a film that I was extremely excited about and thoroughly enjoyed. For most of the film, I was so captivated by the stunning cinematography, fantastic performances, great score, and quality costumes and production design, that I was convinced that this should be a 10/10 film.
But then, unfortunately, the ending came
I believe that the ending of a film is the most important part. What are you going to leave the audience with? What is your final statement to them? Well, in this film, it is so contrived, confusing, and absurd that any final statement becomes confusing, and I left the theater with a bad taste in my mouth.
The ending is so unrealistic that it threatens to destroy every frame of what came before
It is done purely to make a statement about the church and to shock the audience. Now, this doesn’t ruin the film as a whole (not for me, at least), but it unfortunately ruins an otherwise excellent film.
